Functional Roof Scoop?

When I finally got my MR2 one of the coolest things I thought I'd be able to do was install one of those side scoops that must server some sort of function considering how ugly they are... Aparently that's not the case, I was recently informed that they do nothing. Nothing.

I wish to change that- So you suppose there's be a way to, say, hollow out the rest of the intake to where it was actually dumping cold air on top of a ram intake? The intake would still be situated in the same place by the vents, but the scoop would dump even more (and even colder) air on top of it.

Is this possible or am I dreaming? I just can't live with this facade(sp?) on my conscience... Pointless scoop... For shame...

For shame indeed my friend lol.....I have a welder on the way right now, my first project is to just weld a box around the filter and then attach some large 3" flex tubing to the box....that way it at least gets some air flowing and keeps some engine heat out as well.

Remember the driver side side vent draws in a lot of air for your filter already, but it too could be made into a ram air set-up. I guess that means mine will be a dual ram air set-up.

This is just one of those mods that doesn't give huge gains and is probably more trouble than its worth, but its turning non-functional things into functional things.

Exactly, I know intakes don't do much anyways, but if I could just have a functioning scoop it would make me smile. I have a 5SFE so obviously speed isn't something I'm too concerned about... heh...

Well when you get a chance post some pics of what you're talking about, I don't even know the type of material the scoops are made from.

I can't find many pictures of the thing unmounted- Do you know exactly how much room there is at the bottom and how it gets into the engine compartment? If it's fiberglass then some drilling may be all it takes as long as its wide enough to take that kind of punishment.

AstOreth, are you talking about a side scoop (below the rub strip, between door and tire) or are you talking about a roof scoop (mounted on engine lid, hanging above side window).

If you're talking about the roof scoop you should edit the title of the thread to say so. You'll get a better response to your question.

so you're talking about the roof scoop ?

apparently if you check out a few threads, the Tom's original roof scoop was supposed to mount to an airbox that created the ram air affect that you're looking for. and now most people just kinda forgot about that part for the looks of the whole thing.

i could be wrong since i just read it off the internet and have never seen it... but either way it'd make a great snorkel kit.

This airbox was for the 3S-GE which was never offered in the United States.

If you don't like the way they look don't get one. There are far better ways to get intake related gains rather than trying to get a functional Tom's aero-intake airbox setup.

No no no, thats the thing, I love the way they look and I plan on getting one regardless, just looking at your sig makes me want one more... I just thought if if wouldn't be too much trouble make it functional then why not?
 Thanks I think... ;)

considering how ugly they are
Sure...I would do it too...I will keep any eye on this thread because it did seem like more trouble that is was worth...but I also hate doing fabrication.

thats not what i heard!!!

hey guys im not a pro at the whole mr2 thing or this message board... but i talked to a toyota tech who owned a few mr2's and to reply to this thread unfortunatley the scoop is NOT functional.... i repeat its NOT!!! yea i was disappointed too and a little confused considering its hollow... but truth is (as you all already know) there is a side air dam which is located right behind the doors... this dam was designed to feed air into the engine bay from the side... now, placing the roof scoop on defeats the purpose because all your doing is creating air pockets!!! air is coming from the side+air coming from the top = nothing....... soooo the air is now being suspended due to the opposite direction in which it is coming in.... get it? once again this is what the guy told me... i still think it has to at least keep things cooler... plus it doesnt look too bad....

Search function. I know this is on the board somewhere because I've read about it before. The toms intake scoop is counter-productive without the airbox attached to it. Cold air comes in through the side vents and hot air is vented through the engine lid. Putting the scoop on brings air in from up top as well and messes with the aerodynamics of hot air venting through the top of the engine lid. Not enough to make a huge difference though. It's mainly just for looks.

if you think about it, it really is useful but maybe not the way you want it to be. if it is hollow then air will run through it, it might not go to the intake but it will help cool the engine down so it does have a purpose.
The air going through it opposed the original airflow, so it slows or stops flow through the engine bay.

On top of the fact that our cars are LIQUID COOLED! Our engines don't need extra airflow to cool them down. Not that it would be very effective either since they don't have much surface area to radiate the heat to the air in the first place.
